How to Optimize a LinkedIn Profile for SEO in 3 Minutes

Posted by Mike Volpe on Wed, Mar 25, 2009

There are really just two basic things you need to do to most LinkedIn profiles to get the most out of them from an SEO standpoint.

  1. Customize your URL.  My LinkedIn profile URL is http://linkedin.com/in/mikevolpe - and you can have one just like it with your name in the URL making it more likely for your profile to rank for searches for your name.
  2. Add Custom Anchor Text to Links.  You can have up to 3 links on your profile to other websites, and these links pass SEO authority.  If you customize the anchor text on the links, you can get the most out of them.

Good tips Mike.

In addition to your recommendations, I'd also suggest the following, though doing these would obviously take more than 3 minutes :-)

1. Select strong keywords then use them amply through the profile like throughout your "experience" section.

2. Make ample use of the "Summary" section to add optimized content about your offerings.

3. If you have a blog, use the LinkedIn WordPress app to load excerpts from your most recent blog posts onto your profile page with links to them (adds optimized content and provides outbound related link value)

4. Join groups related to your industry - Their names & outbound links will show up on your profile page. (some keyword anchor-text / outbound link opportunities)

5. Answer questions in the LinkedIn Answers section - get enough and the category names (keywords for your industry) show up on your profile as well, and can add a little trustworthiness if your answers are worthy).

It takes longer to watch the video than to optimize your profile. Thanks to Alan and Mike for these useful tips.
