Turning Lemons into Lemonade... or Not.

Posted by Mike Volpe on Mon, Mar 16, 2009

I was in an airport recently and noticed that they had taken down the pay phones.  I guess that makes sense, pretty much everyone has a cell phone now.  What surprised me was that the old structure that used to hold a bunch of pay phones had become a de facto trash receptacle, since it was not being used for anything else.

Rather than just taking their ball and going home, the phone company (or airport or whoever controls the space) could have done something cool.  There must be power running there, they could have made a cell phone charging station, and sold advertising to cell phone companies (hardware makers or service providers).

Is there any way you can take advantage of changes in your market?  Rather than canceling or stopping something, can you change it to be new and different?

Interesting post there Mike.

I was actually wondering the same thing today (about pay phones completely disappearing).

I had an interesting conversation the other day where I was wondering what gas stations were going to look like after oil runs out. Maybe they should start wondering what to replace the pumps with before its too late?

How about something multi-functional, having a mirror, Hand sanitizer station below, then cell phone charging down near your feet. There is never enough hand sanitizers in airports - since people are getting on and off germ tubes. plug in your phone below. Then use the mirror to refresh, lipstick, powder, whatever...

How do my cell-less friends talk at the airport? Borrowing other people's phones?

I like both of the above options and will toss in a place for folks to plug in laptops. Perhaps stations like that already exist in some airports, yet for many you must skulk along the seating rows looking for the occasional post outlet or flip-back cover that's (if you're lucky) close to an open seat. If you want to make money, just put a quarter slot next to the plug! Especially useful if you've got a $1.75 soda machine next mere steps away...

You know, I think a digital interactive travel information directory would be great and there would be a million and one ways to monetize it.

I'm sure the airport is getting around to doing something with the space. They have the plans, they're just awaiting for approval. They should have approval next week. It's definitely on their to-do list. It'll look great. They're looking forward to it...

The problem with most lemons is that no one takes the time to make lemonade out of them. Or arnold palmers. Or greyhounds. :-)
