Getting to the Finish Line in Isolation

Posted by Mike Volpe on Wed, Feb 25, 2009

isolation chamber

I am almost at the end of the month.  I have to admit it has been difficult to blog every single day, and I fear I have become pretty uninteresting.  But I hate to fail.  So here I am writing a blog article at 10pm after a long day where I have even more work to do before I get some sleep before an early morning.

What do you do when you have a project that is 80% complete, but you have trouble making time for the last 20%?

Today, I had a project just like that, and I had to lock myself in a room at the office - for two reasons.  First, for some peace and quiet.  I sit near our sales team, out in the open - the way it should be - but sometimes it makes it hard to concentrate since they are always on the phone.  The second reason was so it was hard for people to find me - having been around at the company for a long time means you get a lot of questions from newer folks.  Again, I love it, but I needed my space today to finish something.

Have you used the "Isolation Chamber" at work?  How often?  For what purpose?

Being connected to tools like Twitter, Outlook, and IM represent my main isolation challenge. Person-to-person connections often take just a few minutes and end with a real solution. In contrast, emails beget more emails, which beget still more. (Perhaps it's because I work with written lists, so things in text seem more "important.") Tasks that require organizational thought mean shutting down that pipeline for an hour or two, though it happens once a day at most. More than that and I'd feel starved for knowing the state of things.

Mike,

Yes I need an isolation chamber too. Right now. It is Friday and I see lots of work ahead this weekend. But I am in growing business so it is exciting too. Sometimes we have to remember it is ok to be less accessible to others either to finish a project or to recharge. Leaders need to take care of themselves too. By the way, I am also the person that was hoping to talk to you for the American Marketing Association Boston Chapter blog(I am a volunteer blogger there).I can see how busy you are so I think I will check in with you down the road. Cheers. Sarah aka @sarahmontague
