Video Podcasting While Driving to Albany

Posted by Mike Volpe on Sat, Feb 14, 2009

I decided to do a video podcast about preparing for inbound marketing to give yourself a better chance for success while I was driving to Albany, NY to give a presentation to the AMA there.

Summary points:

  • Too many people jump into inbound marketing without the proper preparation
  • Who are your customers?  What is your fundamental value proposition?
  • To answer these questions, talk to and interview your customers - ask them how they would describe your company and product or service
  • Ask your customers where they hang out, how they learn more about their industry, what they read, how much they use discussion forums, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

All of this will help you with 3 things:

  1. Some good seed words for starting your keyword research for SEO purposes
  2. Great topics for content creation (blogging) and ways to find some other blogs to read and comment on
  3. Starting points for where to get involved in your social media activity that will target the highest proportion of people in your market

Good post. You seem to really be finding a rhythm with the daily posting.

It is very helpful to see things in print that you already know or should know, #2 in particular. For 2009, my objective was to start blogging. And I have done so without any pre-blogging surveys. If I had spent the last quarter of 2008 doing research, I could have been SURE my blog content was relevant. As it is now, I am just hoping it's relevant.

And more so, you made me visualize the impact it could have if one of my local customers came across my comments on a "national" blog. Depending on the blog and number of comments, that could be credibility I could never have bought.

But never too late to start. One of my other objectives for 2009, is more use email marketing and and surveys. Seth Godin has a great post regarding surveys today.

The idea that people are recording video podcasts while driving frightens me.

@David - I agree. I think it is fine to adjust your strategy after you have started... I sure it will help you improve your results.

I have yet to start social media & blogging properly and you raise some valid points there Mike.

Keep your eyes on the road though ;)

Glad to see you trying out different things on the blog. I think it's great to see bloggers step outside of where they are comfortable and experiment. :)
