Katie Couric on Digg - Is she getting a free pass?

Posted by Mike Volpe on Thu, Aug 28, 2008

Katie Couric joined Digg to "share her press pass with the community".  But is she really participating in the community? Here is what she has done so far.

  1. Wore a cute t-shirt and made a video.
  2. Submitted that video and got 3400+ Diggs.
  3. Gathered a bunch of people to be her friends.
  4. Submitted articles and videos, but thy are ALL ABOUT HER - they all have "Katie Couric" in the title.
  5. She has only Dugg a couple things that all look like are associated with her.

Is that really "participating in Digg"?  Maybe famous people don't need to engage in the community.  But what is the point then? They might as well have "biggestkatiecouricfan" or someone submit her stuff and be their presence on places like Digg

For reference, here is her video on YouTube announcing what she was going to do.  What do you think?

Well, if nothing else, it sounds like her minions understand SEO and the value of keywords. It all sounds pretty self-serving, especially for a high-profile personality that doesn't NEED the publicity.

Granted, we all use our social media/social networking channels of choice at some level for the occasional shameless self-promotion, but if you don't pimp your own ride sometimes --- who will?

I don't feel she's really engaging with the Digg platform to its highest level, but at least she's engaging. Maybe she'll bring us a new, cool Digger & Tweeter!

Love the blog and tweet. Very innovative and new school marketing. However when you look at Katie and Digg this is classic old school marketing meets new school. Put yourself in the shoes of a CBS news exec. Your prime demographic of 34-54 viewing audience of the evening news is declining (when was the last time you watched the evening news?) as media gets thin sliced into smaller and smaller bits and pieces. You have in a sense lost your audience. Next how to do you leverage your $10+M investment into a cute news anchor is trying her best to win back a lost audience?

Now put yourself into a Digg’s exec shoes. How do you make money? How do you attract a larger audience outside of the 18-34 audience who knows what and who Digg is. Let me tell you most people over 35 can’t even tell you who or what Digg, Stumble upon, Delicious or any of the other thousands of “cool” hot sites that are supposedly revolutionizing the world.

It comes down to money and I think in this case it’s an interesting paring and you will see more and more of this as old school media outlets try to transition to new revenue streams and new media looks for ways to actually make some money. However I will give you full credit that unless CBS-Katie understand and adopt several of the social media principles you mentioned they will not realize the potential value of their investment and this will go the way many of these parings have with “What where you thinking dick?”.

You don't think this might be a marketing effort by DIGG to connect themselves to traditional media?

I do.
