VOTE: Should Mike Volpe Get a Blackberry Curve or an iPhone 3G?

Posted by Mike Volpe on Mon, Aug 25, 2008

I am in the middle of a problem.  I can't decide on my next phone.  Neither one is perfect.  (Yes, all you Apple groupies, the iPhone has drawbacks!)

Blackberry Curve Benefits:

  1. Full Keyboard.  I have huge hands and LOVE my full keyboard with real keys.
  2. Video.  The iPhone does not take video.  I would use video for interviews for blogging.
  3. Corporate Synch.  Bulletproof IT-supported synchronization with Exchange Email & Calendar.  Simple, works, easy.

iPhone Benefits:

  1. Full Browser.  Using a full browser would be great for blogging and a ton of other stuff.
  2. Qik.  I can't take recorded video, but I can live stream with Qik now.  Cool, but will I use it?
  3. Cool.  It is cooler.  But is it also a fad?  Do I really want to be an Apple Black Turtleneck person?
  4. Podcasts.  I think my iPhone will download podcasts automatically, which would be cool and help me keep up to date.

I love you crowdsourcing your technology decisions.

Meanwhile, having run this same gauntlet recently, a couple of thoughts from a somewhat non-technical technology consultant.

I agree on the keyboard. I do not like the iphone keyboard, but it's getting better. But, if you type a lot on your phone, it is indeed an issue.

I'm told you can very easily jailbreak your iphone and have it take great video. A couple guys in my office do it all the time.

On the corporate sync, the new iphone has exchange support and you can also sync from your laptop to phone using .Me and it works great.

Ultimately the full browser was the killer app for me.

And if you get the white iphone (like me) I believe you are inherently less of a clone!

Good luck with this most critical of post-modern decisions.

Neither... I'd vote for Samsung Instinct or better the next gPhone. iPhone is Mac & Mac is proprietary !

iPhone for sure! What other phone can you shake for a restaurant, have light saber wars with friends, and play with helicopters and tanks? If that's not enough you can tell people you've got an accelerometer in your phone - now that just sounds cool! You could always buy the thousand dollar app that does nothing or just watch your HubSpot YouTube videos in 3G :)

Yeah, you've gotta get the iPhone.

Thanks everyone for the votes and comments, both here and on Twitter. Based on the feedback, I bought an iPhone 3G 16GB. So far it is pretty good. Still need to get faster at typing and figure out some settings to improve battery life.
