Annoying Favicon problem in IE (Internet Explorer)

Posted by Mike Volpe on Fri, Mar 21, 2008

I have this annoying problem in IE where it is displaying the wrong favicons (the little icons next to the URL and on the browser tab).  So when I am on Google, it will show the icon for StumbleUpon, or something else.  Evertying else works, but for some reason this really pisses me off.

I found some forums posts about it, but would the geeks at Microsoft just fix the darn problem?

I, too, used to experience that same favicon problem ... until I switched to Firefox and Flock. :-)

:) I use Firefox a lot, but I actually like to have 2 browsers. One (Firefox) with tons of extensions and toolbars for doing internet marketing and SEO, and another (IE) that I keep really clean with a huge window and no toolbars (good for demo-ing software and using Saas apps).

Any luck with this issue? I have the same issue on my work laptop. Unfortunately Firefox is not allowed on our network, so I'm limited in that respect. It's more of an annoyance than anything, but the CDW site shows an unknown icon. One of the forums I visit frequently shows the CDW logo, and the National Weather Servuce radar site shows the icon for Slashdot.org.

I found a fix for this issue. These icons are stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder as favicon.ico. Each website has its own favicon. If you simply delete the offending favicon from "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" then IE will download the site's correct favicon the next time you visit. Just check all of the favicon files and look in the Internet Address to see which ones don't match and delete them.

Hope this helps.
