VCs Work at Startups - Many Surprised by Type of Work I just saw this article and found it both funny and interesting. In the debate among entrepreneurs and VCs, I keep hearing a few arguments about how important is or is not to have had entrepreneurial experience. Some pretty successful VCs seem to have never had an operating role, yet some of the most respected partners at the better known firms will tell you not to go into VC without having been an entrepreneur. Some of my favorite quotes from the article: "... a lot of entrepreneurs resent VCs because they think they're disconnected from reality. Now, I see why.'' [yes, the posh offices, assistants, bottomless budgets, expensive dinners and fancy cars are NOT how real entrepreneurs live] "I had no idea of the number of details that I'd have to deal with every day." [yes, in a startup you do not walk in to a job with your laptop, treo, and office all set up for you, and yes, mundane things like business cards, stationary, contracts, do not take care of themselves] MercuryNews.com 12/08/2006 Venture capitalists switch to startups
