Posted by Mike Volpe on Mon, May 03, 2010

I have hired 2 people that I first communicated with on Twitter so far.  Here is a video from local Fox News with some tips on using Twitter to find your next job - featuring David Gallant (HubSpot employee) and other local Boston marketing celebrities including Dan Schawbel who has been interviewed on the HubSpot blo.

So if someone wanted to come work with, say, Mike Volpe at HubSpot, how should they approach them or bring up the subject? I imagine a "Hey? You hiring? Because I'm looking!" DM is a little unsubtle!

What has worked in my case is people just being social and connecting with people and talking about what they do. The people I hired were doing something cool and I approached them. Alternatively if there is a job posted on the site, approaching someone to ask more about it should be fine...

I was hired via Twitter this past January. I met my now boss online via Twitter a full 8 months before she had budget. In that time, I had been building my online brand credibility and industry presence. When she tweeted that she had budget to hire, we already had a relationship and I dm'd her. Five weeks later I accepted a role.

It can work - it's not about selling yourself. It is about establishing an online presence that offers value in the area where your skills are. Once you do that, you are sure to be noticed.
